Worn, Cracked, or Broken Car Key in Worcester?

If your existing car key is unusable for any reason, we'll make you a new one. We complete most repairs while you wait or within a day, and if a key is beyond repair, we'll cut you a replacement.

What Is Car Key Programming?

The opened head of a car key showing the small transponder chip that the car reads before it starts.

A transponder key carries a small chip, and car key programming gets your car to recognize it. When the key turns, a reader in the ignition barrel checks for the code transmitted by your car's transponder chip. If the chip isn't synced with the car's ignition system, access is denied, keeping the vehicle secure. Push-to-start keys work on a similar principle, using a coil that carries the signal between the fob and the car over a short range.

We cut a replacement car key to fit and then program it to your vehicle using our own equipment, which also runs diagnostics on most major makes. Transponder keys, remotes, and push-to-start fobs are all programmed in our shop in Worcester, MA, or from our mobile service van.

Key Replacement Options, From Worn Keys to Key Fobs

A worn car key, a snapped key, a flip key and a smart key fob laid side by side on a gray surface.

We replace worn and broken car keys and remote fobs, including Mercedes, Dodge, and Chrysler flip keys. New keys are also cut for each of the needs below, matched to the key type your car uses:

No key left: When every key has gone missing, a new one can be created without you needing to move the car — our van comes to you.

A spare key: We handle key duplication, cutting a copy of your existing car key for you to keep as a spare. Ask about a discount when you need more than one key.

Push-to-start fobs: For push-to-start cars, including 2020 and newer Honda, Acura, Toyota, and Lexus models, a replacement key fob can be programmed on-site.

Dealer-only keys: Dealer-only and European car keys are cut and programmed here, and the Mercedes ESL (electronic steering lock) is also replaced.

New keys are one part of our business. Beyond that, our automotive locksmith work also covers car lockouts, broken key extraction, door lock repair, and rekeying the ignition to match your door key on most vehicles.

How a Replacement Car Key Gets Made

There are three steps to getting a replacement key for your car:

A driver turns a new car key in the ignition as the dashboard lights come on.

1. Tell Us About the Vehicle

Call us or send a key request with the year, make, and model. Let us know whether the car still drives, whether you have a working key, and whether it's push-to-start or a regular turn-key ignition. You'll receive a quote for approval.

2. Bring It In or Use Our Mobile Service

Schedule a store appointment and bring the car to our shop on W Boylston St. Or, take advantage of our mobile service anywhere in Worcester County for an extra charge.

3. Your New Key, Cut and Programmed

After a new key is cut, our programmer connects to your car to program the chip. That programming is what lets your new car key start the engine.

Why Choose Us as Your Local Locksmith for Car Keys?

Jerry's Hardware & Car Keys has been serving Worcester, MA since 1946. We combine a full auto locksmith shop with a hardware store, so your new car key is cut and programmed by people who've been doing this for decades.

Some hardware stores can cut the key, but without the equipment to program or copy the chip, your car won't start. Our team does both, in one visit.

Keys in stock: We keep keys on hand for 80 to 90 percent of vehicles, so there's a good chance yours is already here.

Same-day work: Most jobs are done the same day.

Makes we cover: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, GM, Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Jeep, RAM, Dodge, Chrysler, and Nissan, for cars, trucks, and commercial vehicles.

Nearby towns: Our van serves customers across the city and the surrounding towns, including West Boylston, Holden, Shrewsbury, Boylston, Auburn, Millbury, Leicester, and Paxton.

Car Key Replacement FAQ

How much does it cost to replace a car key?

You'll get a quote for your vehicle before any work starts, so you know the cost up front. That quote covers cutting, programming, and materials. There's no charge to look at your key or remote.

Yes, we cut and program replacement car keys at our counter or from our van, and that includes dealer-only keys and remotes under the Right to Repair Law. We're registered with NASTF as a Vehicle Security Professional, which gives us the access needed to do that work.

We need the VIN to make a new key for a European vehicle. For other makes, the year, make, and model are enough to start your quote.

You can get a blank key cut at some hardware stores, but that only solves half the problem. The chip inside a transponder key also has to be programmed or copied to match your specific car, or the car won't recognize it and won't start. We cut the key and program the chip together, so you leave with one that actually works.
